Internet Media Type (contributed by Hugo Haas)

A media type is a well-known identifier corresponding to a particular format. It is used in various protocols on the Internet to let applications know about the type of data being transmitted.

For example, the media type for XML is:

application/xml

...and the media type for SOAP 1.2 messages is:

application/soap+xml

Here's is how a media type is represented in an HTTP header:

Content-Type: application/soap+xml;action="http://actioncon.com/action/submit"
