target namespace

(contributed by Andre Tost and Priscilla Walmsley)

Both the XML Schema and the WSDL standard support defining a target namespace. The elements declared in an XML schema can be associated with a namespace that they will belong to in any XML document that follows the schema. Similarly, instances of messages defined in a WSDL-based service contract can also be associated with a namespace. Defining a target namespace is required by the WS-I basic profile. It is also used when importing an XML schema or WSDL document from within another schema or service contract.
